Keeping your timepiece ‘tick’ety-boo

Whether you own a family heirloom or a previously purchased, much-loved timepiece, all watches need to be cared for. This prolongs the lifetime of the watch, as well as ensuring it operates efficiently.

Different types of aftercare

Battery replacement and reseal

A quartz watch will need its battery replacing at some stage. This should always be done by a professional and, if the watch is a water-resistant model, should be resealed accordingly.

Full servicing

A full service entails the timepiece being taken apart and all internal plates, springs, bridges and screws, being cleaned in a sonic bath. The watch is then re-assembled, re-cased, re-sealed and tested. This should always be completed by an authorised brand service centre and will usually take anywhere for 4-8 weeks to complete. Generally, a full service should be carried out every 4-6 years depending on wear and usage.

General aftercare advice

Avoid extreme temperatures

Most watches are tested for efficiency between -5 °C and 60 °C but sudden transitional temperature changes, such as going from a hot poolside to taking a dip in the water, can cause rubber seals to fail and allow water ingress.

Avoid impacts and repetitive shocks

These can damage the inner workings, meaning the timekeeping may be affected or break the movement completely. We would highly recommend not wearing your treasured timepiece whilst playing sports such as Golf or Tennis.

Avoid magnetic fields

With today’s lifestyle, magnetic fields can be hard to avoid completely, however excessive exposure should be considered. Keep your watch stored away from laptops, speakers or on top of safes.
